Why I Create Custom Funkos
I love Funko Pops, but I saw some popular characters didn’t receive the same Funko treatment as others did. There were pops for the Sour Patch Kids candy, but no pops existed for the beloved characters from the episodic adventure game Life is Strange. I knew pretty early on that one of my first custom Funkos would be Chloe Price from Life is Strange, but I had to get some practice with polymer clay. If Funko wasn’t going to offer LiS Pops, I’d just make my own.
My first Funko project was taking a basic dog Funko pop and creating a custom sculpt of my dog for part of his memorial. I had very little experience with polymer clay, so I had to practice the art of conditioning the clay, baking, and such. I taught myself through trial and error, recording my efforts, making notes, and improving my methods as I went along.
I started sculpting out Chloe’s hair on an existing Funko, but I struggled with a few details on creating her beanie. I sculpted two more custom Funko pops of streamers (my Fortnite Ninja Funko being one of them) before I finally finished Chloe Price.
You can find my time-lapsed Chloe Price video here.
You can watch the creation of Ninja here.
I soon realized other fandoms were being neglected in shows and video games. There were also re-imagined characters and new ideas I wanted to explore. So, I created my own line of “pro player/streamer” Pops, characters from Red Dead Redemption 2, Apex Legends, Doom Patrol, Umbrella Academy and more. You can find pics of most of these creations in the Artwork gallery, and many more Funko creations are in the works!
